Rome is a historic city that spearheaded progressive engineering and civilization. While this ancient city may have already impacted history it is still being built and refined to reflect the world’s greatest architecture. When the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints obtained permission to build a Temple in Rome, they chose VCBO architects to complete the design. There was a lot of pressure for this new building to reflect local architectural styles while following the conventions of the religious space.
For this project to be successful their team would need to have an understanding of local building codes, approved design materials, and building means and methods, all of which could dramatically affect the direction of design. The Rome Temple took nearly 10 years from design to completion but now stands as a religious showpiece for people from around the world to appreciate.
Ensign was hired by VCBO Architects to provide the grading plan for the entire site. As the project progressed, the scope of work increased to include the overall civil design, as well as several specialty structural assignments. Coordinating the design intent with local construction practices was a challenge, but there were many dedicated individuals from the Church, VCBO Architects, and volunteers who all helped to ensure a successful project.
By the time the project was finished and dedicated, Ensign had completed not only the civil design services for the project, but also the design for some of the cladding system attachment, bronze railing system, chapel foundation settlement mitigation, steel stud system, suspended concrete patio support, and many other specialty civil and structural projects. Ensign was honored to offer ongoing support throughout the project and looks forward to any future international projects.
